Our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils took part in Bikeability training, delivered by the highly experienced instructors from Outspoken Training. The children were an absolute credit to the school, demonstrating maturity, enthusiasm and a real commitment to developing their cycling skills and road awareness.

Over the two days, pupils completed both on‑site and on‑road training following the national Bikeability framework. They began with Level 1 skills, which focused on essential bike control and safety checks carried out in a traffic‑free environment. This included completing bike safety inspections—often known as the M Check—and learning about proper bike maintenance, ensuring their equipment was roadworthy and safe to use. 

Once pupils had demonstrated strong control skills, they progressed to Level 2 training, where they went out onto local residential roads accompanied by qualified Outspoken instructors. Here, they learned how to:

• Start and stop safely
• Signal clearly while maintaining balance
• Use appropriate road positioning
• Understand and interpret road signs and markings
• Pass parked vehicles safely
• Navigate junctions and share the road responsibly with other users

These on‑road sessions give children real experience of cycling in everyday conditions and help build the confidence they need to make short journeys—such as travelling to school—more independently. 

Throughout the programme, pupils also developed important life skills, including risk awareness, decision‑making, resilience, and independence. Research from Bikeability shows that after completing training, children are more confident, more aware of road safety, and more likely to choose cycling as a healthy and sustainable mode of transport.

We are incredibly proud of how well all the Year 5 and 6 pupils represented the school. Their behaviour, enthusiasm and willingness to learn were consistently praised by the Outspoken Training team, and they fully embraced the opportunity to develop a vital lifelong skill.
