Year One and Year Four Visit to the Derby Open Centre

Pupils from Year One and Year Four took part in an educational visit to the Derby Open Centre, where they had the opportunity to visit both a Hindu Temple and a Sikh Gurdwara. This visit was closely linked to the Religious Education curriculum and supported the children in developing an informed understanding of different beliefs, values and traditions through direct experience.

During their time at the Hindu Temple, the pupils were introduced to key features of the place of worship, including important symbols and images. They learned about how the temple is used for prayer and reflection. A short meditation session encouraged the children to focus their breathing and enjoy peace and tranquillity. The pupils demonstrated respect and engagement by asking relevant questions and listening attentively throughout the session.

At the Sikh Gurdwara, the children learned about the fundamental Sikh values of equality, community and service to others. One of the most memorable aspects of the visit was observing and participating in Langar, the shared meal that is offered freely to all visitors. Pupils particularly enjoyed tasting the chapattis and learned how Langar reflects the importance of inclusion, generosity and selfless acts of kindness within the Sikh faith.

The visit was a valuable opportunity for learning beyond the classroom. Pupils were commended by the centre leader for their positive behaviour and thoughtful questioning throughout the day. We were proud of Year One and Year Four for the maturity, respect and enthusiasm that they demonstrated during this enriching educational experience.
