Quality of Teaching and Learning in History

At Shustoke our teaching of History will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim for it to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and to know more about the past. We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, evaluate evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Our aim is that the children learn the discipline of history meaning that they become inquisitive, keen to examine the past and are diligent and thorough in their work.   

All children study History throughout their time at Shustoke and are given opportunities to learn in a variety of ways including: visits, assemblies, using ICT, the use of external experts or workshops.  We also use links with the local community, for example the Coleshill Historical Society and other local Historical experts. Our own local area provides rich sources of evidence from which the children can learn.
